Autodesk Sketchbook Pro for the new iPad

As an avid Sketchbook Pro user on the iPad 2, I was super keen to see how it performed with the new display and graphics processor.

Sadly, I can’t even be bothered to write a proper review.

The app is slow and clunky, and despite Apple selling it as a great app for the new iPad, it’s too slow to be a nice useable app. Sorry Autodesk, but you’ve failed on this version. More importantly… this highlights a FAR bigger issue. Apple, you should have upgraded the processor, clearly these new retina display apps are struggling with not enough horsepower.

My recommendation is to avoid this app… at least until there is an update that address the speed issue.

UPDATE: within 72 hours, Autodesk issued an update which resolves the slowness issues, the app now runs at the same speed as the iPad 2 version and we’re all happy campers again. I shall be posting a full review shortly.

This is the sort of responsiveness that we want from a software firm. Outstanding Autodesk, really. Thankyou.

I have the same problem. I made the purchase of the third generation iPad specifically to work with SketchBook Pro. Primarily for improvements associated with the screen resolution. I’m really disappointed. Do you believe that an update could fix the problem or is it related to lack of power of the NEW iPad?

The processor in this iPad is the same as the iPad 2 which means that unless Autodesk rework the app to take advantage of the Graphics Chip rather than the relying on the existing processor, it’ll always be slow, as it’s pumping around 4 times more pixels.

There are a few other good apps that I’ve jumped over too, but sadly I just wish Autodesk would fix this, as I believe this is the best app in it’s class… Well… it was.
